Sept. 28, 2011 Conservatory Concert Jazz Band/Wind Symphony Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m.

The Conservatory’s Concert Jazz Band, conducted by Bobby Watson, will perform Watson’s The Gates BBQ Suite. The Conservatory Wind Symphony, directed by Steven D. Davis will perform Corigliano’s Circus Maximus, Symphony No. 3 for Large Wind Ensemble. We also welcome PRISM Quartet, who will perform William Bolcom’s Concerto Grosso for saxophone quartet and orchestra, which the quartet commissioned.

Legendary vocalist Mavis Staples has had a historic career as an American performer, beginning more than sixty years ago when she started singing with her groundbreaking family group, the Staple Singers.

Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.
